Andrejs Zagars, who has been working as the General Director of The Latvian National Opera since 1996, has also in a short time become one of the most interesting and innovating stage directors of the present time.
After graduating from the Latvian Academy of Music and the Film Actors’ Studio he became a popular actor in Latvian and Russian films and theatre. Before he started his activity in opera field, he developed concepts for numbers of outstanding restaurants owned and managed by himself.
Under his leadership also the Latvian National Opera has developed to a high international level. He established the annual Riga Opera Festival showcasing the best productions of the Latvian National Opera that continues to attract an international audience and critics from the world’s leading music magazines and newspapers.
As a stage director Andrejs Zagars has, during the last few years, staged classical operas such as The Flying Dutchman, The Demon (Anton Rubinstein), The Queen of Spades, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, La Traviata Carmen and Nabucco. His fresh interpretations of these classical works have received a lot of international acclaim by the press. He has toured with his opera company and his works in Dalhalla (Sweden) and Savonlinna (Finland) Opera Festivals and at the Novaja Opera in Moscow, Catania in Italy and Bordeaux in France, among others.
In season 2008-09 he made his German debuts with Werther by Massenet in Erfurt and Prince Igor by Borodin in Essen. In addition he produced a new Don Giovanni in Riga. In this season he will stage the Rosenkavalier of Richard Strauss for Budapest State Opera..
